Pen International ? Free the Word! Day at Poetry Parnassus

June 28 2012

Written by Chloe Wong

Yesterday?s Free the Word! Festival day at the Southbank Centre in partnership with English PEN and as part of the Poetry Parnassus was full of wonderful readings and spoken-word performances by poets from around the world. At the International Writers Breakfast we welcomed Zarganar, Burmese writer, comedian and poet ? a previous PEN International main case for the Writers in Prison Committee. Released from imprisonment in late 2010 as part of a mass amnesty of political prisoners, Zarganar spoke movingly about his experiences under arrest and the importance of freedom of expression and the role of the writer.

There were four panel sessions following the Writers Breakfast ? focusing on global conflict, exile and audience, minority languages and marginalized voices, and a robust discussion of questions of nationhood and poetry. Speakers during the day included Jack Mapanje from Malawi, David Shook from Mexico, Jo Shapcott from the UK, Sir Andrew Motion (Poet Laureate 1999 ? 2009) who spoke of the importance of poetry in speaking truth to power. Rafeef Ziadeh, a Palestinian performance poet and activist, Shailja Patel from Kenya, Syl Cheney Coker from Sierra Leone and Kosal Khiev from Cambodia were also among the participants.

English PEN set up two special zones at the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank Centre ? Freedom to write, where guests could take part in creative writing workshops, and Freedom to Read, where a range of PEN-related publications were on display ? including the recently launched The World Record, an anthology featuring the work of hundreds of poets participating in the Poetry Parnassus in translation.

The day was a wonderful celebration of writing, of poetry and of freedom of expression.

We?ll be featuring videos of all of the sessions online later this week.

Agriculture secretary presses House on farm bill

(AP) ? Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on Friday urged the Republican-led House to vote on a long-term farm policy bill, saying failure to act could leave livestock producers exposed to disasters and other farmers uncertain about the future.

Vilsack, in an interview with The Associated Press, dismissed apparent concerns among House GOP leaders that the half-trillion-dollar farm and food bill could lead to an election-year rebellion among conservatives. "If they put it up on the board, there would be enough votes," he said.

"It just needs to get done and there's no excuse for it not to be done," he said.

The former Iowa governor said he was particularly concerned about livestock producers now coping with fires in the West and drought in the Midwest. Federal livestock disaster programs ended last September and would not be renewed if the current farm bill, which expires Sept. 30, is extended because Congress is unable to pass a new bill.

The Senate last week voted 64-35 to pass a five-year bill. It ends direct payments to farmers regardless of whether they plant crops, sets up new crop support programs and reduces the federal deficit by $23 billion over the next 10 years.

Obstacles to passage are greater in the House, where conservatives are seeking deeper cuts in the federal food stamp program, which makes up about 80 percent of the nearly $100-billion-a-year spending under the legislation. The Senate bill targets $4 billion in savings from the expected $770 billion in food stamp costs over the next decade.

The chairman of the House Agriculture Committee told the AgriTalk radio show on Thursday that the House's farm bill, which has yet to be introduced, would probably look for $14 billion or $15 billion in food stamp savings. Rep. Frank Lucas, R-Okla., aid the entire bill would reduce spending by about $30 billion.

Lucas has scheduled a committee vote on a farm bill for July 11, and said that once the committee has acted, he will ask Republican leaders for floor time. "I don't care if it's 8:00 in the morning or if it's 3:00 in the afternoon, or if it's 10 minutes till midnight, just give me time."

GOP leaders have not ruled out action on a farm bill, but have indicated they want to devote much of the House's time to jobs and regulatory bills that draw a contrast with Obama administration policies, and with 2013 spending bills.

Vilsack said he was confident that Lucas and the top Democrat on the committee, Rep. Collin Peterson of Minnesota, were committed to getting a bill passed. "I want to strengthen their hand as they deal with House leadership," Vilsack said.

The secretary said that without a new farm bill in place, farmers would be unable to make decisions about future production, there would be a lack of clarity about trade promotion programs and uncertainty about conservation programs, He said the farm bill could become a part of expected yearend talks on how to handle expiring tax cuts and automatic cuts in defense and domestic programs, resulting in deeper reductions to farm programs. "I don't think that's in the best interest of rural America," he said.

The House bill, in addition to seeking greater savings, is expected to retain some aspect of price support programs, supported by Southern rice and peanut farmers, that are eliminated in the Senate bill. Lucas said he thought differences with the Senate version could be worked out quickly.

But he also said there might have to be a one-year extension even if a new bill is passed because of the time needed to phase in new programs. "I have carried for a year a draft copy of an extension in my pocket," he said in the radio interview. He said he hoped it wouldn't be needed but would be used "if an extension is in the best interests of the folks back home on the farm."

Crytek: Past, present and the future - Part 1

Crytek, the developer behind the original Far Cry and Crysis series, with their shiny new Cryengine 3 are developing some of the best looking games this generation.

Crytek landed on the scene with the release of the original Far Cry an action First person shooter on the PC in 2004. Far Cry was published by Ubisoft and got average reviews from the critics but still sold relatively well because of the game?s sandbox nature. The game showcased some of the best graphics of that time and Crytek suddenly became really popular with gamers because of their beautiful Cryengine. Ubisoft later ported the game with some additional content to the original Xbox and later to the Xbox 360 titled Far Cry: Instincts.

Crytek moved on from Far Cry and in 2007 brought out the smash hit Crysis in partnership with Electronic Arts (EA). Crysis is considered by many as being too graphically advance for its time, as many gamers couldn?t even run it smoothly on medium settings. But those who could enjoy it in its full glory found that it was leaps beyond anything else out there. Even now the five year old game is often considered for graphic card benchmarking in the PC gaming community.

The game was built on the resource hungry Cryengine 2 and had sandbox game-play with the option for the gamer to go anywhere on the map and the freedom to tackle missions as they saw fit. Players could opt for Stealth, run and gun or a mix it up as they go along.

The game did well in the market, selling over 3 million copies to date, which is pretty impressive since it?s a PC exclusive shooter. But it was also the most pirated game that year. Crytek estimated that almost 5 million users had downloaded that game off torrents during the first few months.

Crytek followed that up with an expansion pack called Crysis: Warhead in 2008 which continued the storyline in a brand new campaign mode and addressed many of the issues the fans had with the first game. Mainly optimization issues and some game-play tweaks. Some of the fans complained that even though Warhead was better optimized and performed better on their rigs, the trade off was in the graphics department since Crysis Warhead did not have the same level of texture detail as that of its predecessor.

In 2011 EA published the long awaited sequel Crysis 2 on PC and Consoles. The sequel was created with the newly developed Cryengine 3 which could support simultaneous cross platform development. Crysis 2 however got slammed hard by the supporters of the original game since EA was trying to create its own Halo and Call of Duty killer and in the process lost sight of what made Crysis so unique.

Fans complained that Crysis 2 was ?dumbed-down? for the console crowd which was true as Electronic Arts was trying to kill two birds (Halo and Call of Duty) with one stone. Crysis 2 went for the linear level design filled with quick time events (QTEs) approach as opposed to the sandbox which made the first game popular.

Paraguay's ousted Lugo calls for return to democracy

ASUNCION (Reuters) - Ousted Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo branded the country's new government illegitimate on Sunday and called for democracy to be restored as neighboring countries intensified criticism of his sudden impeachment.

Lugo, a leftist former Roman Catholic bishop, said his removal from office was "a parliamentary coup against the will of the people" and said he would back any peaceful effort to restore democracy in the soy-exporting South American nation.

Congress voted overwhelmingly on Friday to remove Lugo from office, saying he had failed in his duty to maintain social order following a bloody land eviction.

Under the Paraguayan constitution, the impeached president was replaced by Vice President Federico Franco, a vocal critic of Lugo for much of his presidency.

Franco's newly appointed foreign minister urged Lugo to help quell the regional tensions, saying it was his "duty as a Paraguayan citizen and former president."

But Lugo refused to help his successor.

"We support any kind of peaceful effort aimed at restoring institutional order that was interrupted by Parliament," he told reporters.

"This is a fake government. You can't collaborate with a government that doesn't have legitimacy," he said, adding that he would attend a summit of the regional trade bloc Mercosur later this week to explain the situation.

Argentina, which currently holds Mercosur's rotating presidency, said Franco's government would not be allowed to attend the meeting.

In a region scarred by military coups and political upheaval in the 1970s and 1980s, the rapid nature of Lugo's impeachment by an opposition-controlled Congress has drawn strong criticism - especially from fellow leftists.

A senior Brazilian official said Paraguay would likely be suspended from the regional UNASUR grouping and from Mercosur, which also includes Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay.

"The point is to make this new government a pariah," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Regional powerhouse Brazil has recalled its top diplomat for consultations and the ambassador is unlikely to return while Franco remains in the presidency, the official added.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez halted oil shipments to Paraguay and withdrew his ambassador from the country. Argentina's Cristina Fernandez pulled top envoy out on Saturday.

"We don't recognize this government. I've ordered the ambassador in Asuncion to pack his things and leave," Chavez said in a speech. "We're going to stop sending oil too."

Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA supplies about a quarter of Paraguay's oil needs under a deal that lets countries buy crude on soft financing terms and even pay in farm goods.

Paraguay's state oil firm said supplies were not at risk, however, due to ample stocks and alternative providers.

LAND CLASHES

Nations including Canada, Spain and Germany recognized the new government after Lugo said on Friday he would accept the congressional vote to remove him. Others, including Chile and Colombia on Sunday, have summoned ambassadors for a briefing.

Despite the chorus of international criticism, Paraguay's low-key riverside capital was calm on Sunday. Fewer police were patrolling the streets than in recent days and restaurants and businesses were open as usual.

"Lugo was useless but what happened in Congress was a joke - it was like pigs talking about hygiene," said Benjamin Aguayo, 18, in downtown Asuncion.

A small group of Lugo supporters gathered outside the state TV studios to demonstrate in favor of his return to office.

Lugo's impeachment was sparked by clashes that killed six police and 11 peasant farmers during a recent land eviction. He was one year away from completing his five-year term.

Paraguay is one of the poorest countries in South America and Lugo, 61, vowed to improve the quality of life of low-income families when his election ended six decades of rule by the conservative Colorado party.

But he struggled to push reforms, including land redistribution to poor peasant farmers, through Congress. A cancer scare and several paternity scandals dating back to his time as a bishop added to his difficulties.

When his allies from the Liberal Party withdrew support for him on Thursday, they cleared the way for the impeachment trial.

In contrast to Lugo, Franco has solid backing among ranchers and farmers in the world's No. 4 soybean exporter.

"The agricultural industry is going to be a priority, no question about it, because it's vital for Paraguay" said Liberal lawmaker Gustavo Cardozo.

Timing of menopause symptoms relates to risk markers for heart disease, stroke

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? The hot flashes and night sweats that most women experience early in menopause are not linked to increased levels of cardiovascular disease risk markers unless the symptoms persist or start many years after menopause begins. These new study results were presented June 23 at The Endocrine Society's 94th Annual Meeting in Houston.

"Our study provides reassurance that the common experience of menopausal symptoms in early menopause is not associated with increases in blood pressure or other risk markers for cardiovascular disease," said lead researcher Emily Szmuilowicz, MD, an assistant professor at Northwestern University's medical school in Chicago.

Researchers have questioned whether vasomotor menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats reflect poor cardiovascular health. However, a 2011 study by Szmuilowicz and co-workers found that women who experienced menopausal symptoms only at the onset of menopause were less likely to have a stroke or heart attack or to die than were women who experienced hot flashes late in menopause or who did not have hot flashes at all.

Their new study focused on markers in the body that have been linked to a raised risk of cardiovascular disease. The risk markers examined were blood pressure, cholesterol, insulin, glucose (blood sugar) and blood markers of abnormal blood vessel function. Because inflammation is common in people with heart disease or stroke, the group also looked at blood markers of inflammation, including white blood cell count -- the number of disease-fighting cells.

This study used retrospective data from nearly 60,000 postmenopausal women who participated in the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study. The ongoing study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, is examining the relationships between health outcomes and new risk indicators for disease.

The researchers grouped women into four categories based on timing of their menopausal symptoms of hot flashes and night sweats: only at the start of menopause (early-onset menopausal symptoms), only years later in menopause (late-onset menopausal symptoms), both time periods (persistent menopausal symptoms), and not at all.

The investigators found no association between early-onset vasomotor menopausal symptoms and increased levels of any cardiovascular risk markers. However, both persistent and late-onset menopausal symptoms were associated with higher blood pressure and higher white blood cell count compared with women without menopausal symptoms, they reported. Persistent menopausal symptoms also correlated with higher levels of glucose and insulin, which are markers for diabetes.

It is unclear why women who experience menopausal symptoms at different stages of menopause may have differing levels of cardiovascular disease risk, Szmuilowicz said She speculated that "if menopausal symptoms occur long after menopause begins, this may signal a blood vessel abnormality that could also affect cardiovascular health."

Zambia?s iconic Levy Stadium stands tall, Thanks to China

Ndola Stadium 389x219 Zambia?s iconic Levy Stadium stands tall, Thanks to China

Ndola-Stadium

In it?s 47 years of independence Zambia had never known the inside of a modern football stadium.

Until two weeks ago, the country?s national team ? the reigning African champions ? fulfilled its international home fixtures at stadia that was a far cry of world soccer governing body FIFA?s standards.

Konkola Stadium was the closest to come to hosting international fixtures and at worst Nkoloma, Nchanga and Arthur Davies stadia were options despite their inadequacies.

The Independence Stadium ? which has hosted some of the greatest football moments in Zambia?s history ? was shut in 2007 after the grand stand was razed for rehabilitations. It neither met those standards the time it was making portions of Zambia?s rich football history. Nonetheless, it hosted great fixtures of all times.

There was also the Dag Hammarkjold in Ndola ? named after a UN Secretary General who perished in a plane crash while on duty from the Congo ? that also was brought down in the hope of constructing another stadium for the 1988 Africa Cup of Nations. It never was and Zambia was banished from the competition that year which went on to be hosted by Kenya.

Thanks to China, the cries for at least a single decent sports facility are no more. Now, an iconic football structure named after third Republican president Levy Mwanawasa stands tall in Ndola ? the Copperbelt?s administrative capital. It opened its gates for the first ever international fixture on June 9, 2012.

The stadium was erected at a cost of US $65 million with a capacity slightly over 40,000. And for the first time, the local football body ? FAZ ? raked in over 500,000 dollars for a single match in a World Cup qualifier against Ghana two weeks ago.

Kelvin Mutafu, the FAZ treasurer, said from gate takings alone the body raked in about K2 billion. That is minus adding such revenue as broadcasting and commercial rights for the sell-out match.

Another picturesque structure, slightly bigger in capacity is currently under construction in Lusaka, where Independence Stadium will receive a facelift.

China is spending about US $94 million on the two projects bringing their total investment in Zambia?s modern sporting infrastructure to a whopping US $159 million.

On completion of the first project, the Chinese construction company expressed delight, particularly with their co-operation with the soccer crazy southern African nation.

Anhui Foreign Economic Construction (Group) Co. Ltd, the construction company, whose Ndola project was courtesy of China?s Commerce ministry and department of aid to foreign countries, completed their assignment within 26 months.

They credit the successful completion of the project to all parties including the local casual workers who contributed immeasurable hours of hard work to deliver a world-class structure.

Kalusha Bwalya is the FAZ president, formerly the Zambian team captain, is one of the most successful players but his ascendance to the top of continental football came without a decent home ground.

The 47-year-old ex-soccer star now administrator knows better that there is nothing that can propel a team to glory than a vociferous united home fan in a conducive atmosphere.

?We had a lovely atmosphere here and winning just paid back that support that the crowd gave,? Bwalya told journalist shortly after Zambia beat Ghana 1-0 at the new stadium.

?We hope to have many happy days at this new home for the African Champions. Yes, as a sporting country we really deserved this structure and now can look forward to the completion of the other two.?

Frenchman Herve Renard guided Zambia to her first major continental title in February 2012 and believes the spectacular structure ?is good and worthy of the champions.?

Incidentally, Zambian captain Christopher Katongo plays his football in China and became the first player on the international stage to score in the brand new super structure.

He delightfully notes; ?I scored the first ever international goal. That is history and no one can take that away from me.?

In the midst of stern criticism from the west about their investment in Africa, China can be proud to associate with an inspiring tale of Zambia.

That tale is being appreciated not only Zambia but across African nations such as Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Angola, all of which are beneficiaries of immense support through such super sporting structures now stand tall as iconic features in their respective cities including Ndola.

Sony set to buy 10 per cent share in Olympus

Reports from Japan claim that Sony will invest heavily in rival camera manufacturer Olympus.

The reputable Nikkei news source claims that Sony will snap up a ten per cent share in the company for ?397m ($620m).

This would make Sony the single largest shareholder at Olympus, which is still reeling from last year's accounting scandal, when it failed to declare investment losses and overstated profits.

The report suggests that Olympus could take advantage of Sony's market share in the imaging sector to lower its production costs and end two years of losses.

Endoscopic goodness

The agreement is also likely to see Sony take a hand in Olympus' profitable manufacturing of medical supplies.

The company currently owns around 70 per cent of the endoscope market, with Sony's sensor-developing expertise expected to cement that share.

An agreement is expected within next month, according to Nikkei.

I don't mean to sound trite, but they should just rename this film "Drug Trip: The Movie" and be done with it. Seriously.Ok then, with that out of the way, I must say, this is a bit of a hard film to really rate or review. Obviously I'm gonna have to do just that, but it is a bit difficult for me.This fantasy centered around The Beatles going out to stop a bunch of creatures caleld Blue Meanies who have taken over a place called Pepperland combines the terrific music of The Beatles with really cool and unique art disrection and visual styles to create a film that is really just an otherworldlt experience. Just so you know, I didn't see this high, but I did have a couple of drinks. I really cn't say what would be the best way to experience this film. I leave that up to you. There's a story, but it's pretty much just a thin clothesline to hang some great tunes and trippy visuals on. This will probably not appeal to some people, but, I at least got something out of it, even if I don't truly know how I feel about this film-hence why my rating is mainly a formaility.I do think this should be seen though, because it is entertaining, and there's some wild stuff going on, even if it does get a bit too self indulgant with the psychedelia. At least there's the music and some subtle, dry humor to make the film more than just trippiness.

PFT: Jacobs repays kid who emptied piggy bank

New Orleans Saints OTAGetty Images

The floodgates officially are open.

After weeks of silence, which many believed was motivated by fear of additional sanctions from the league office, the coaches who have been suspended as part of the bounty/pay-for-performance program are beginning to speak out aggressively regarding the league?s case against players accused of offering, paying, or receiving money for inflicting injury.

It has begun with Saints interim head coach/assistant head coach/linebackers coach Joe Vitt.? In the wake of Wednesday?s statement in which he expressed dismay over the sheet of paper that accuses him of putting up $5,000 for the alleged bounty on Brett Favre in the 2009 NFC title game, Vitt elaborated in remarks to Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

?There?s gotta be some concerns from the league?s standpoint and anybody?s standpoint about the authenticity of any of these documents,? Vitt said regarding the key piece of paper that apparently lists the money pledged for the 2009 NFC title game.? ?I think that?s a huge concern.? It looks like that document has been falsified or tampered with. What kind of credibility do they have if they take documents like that and show it to players??

He?s right.? The one useful needle in the 50,000-page haystack contains a major flaw.? The notes prepared by a still-unknown person suggest that Vitt ponied up $5,000 to whoever knocked Favre out of the game.? So if as to Vitt the notes aren?t reliable, how are they reliable as to Jonathan Vilma (who is shown as kicking in $10,000) or anyone else?

The league has said that the offer appearing on the notes was corroborated by three people:? Gregg Williams, Mike Ornstein, and someone whom the league won?t name.? But Ornstein has said he didn?t tell the league Vilma had offered $10,000.

Williams hasn?t said anything, but there?s a chance Williams will be emboldened by Vitt?s decision to talk tough.

?I stated from Day 1 to investigators ? and I hope they took good notes ? our players have done nothing wrong. Nothing wrong,? Vitt said. ?Our players never crossed the white lines with an intent to injure anybody.?

Apart from the issue of innocence or guilt (and as I?ll explain during and after today?s PFT Live the issue of guilt or innocence really is a question of semantics), Vitt has a problem with the league?s procedure for passing judgment on the players.

?The bylaws of the National Football League supersede the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights,? Vitt said.? While the players aren?t ?on trial? in the criminal sense of the word (and thus not entitled to the protections of the Constitution), the fact remains that the NFL and the NFLPA have crafted a quasi-judicial procedure for handling matters of discipline without an outside person deciding whether the player did what he?s accused of doing.? And the procedure that the NFL administers must be fair and impartial, especially where the player loudly disputes the allegations against him.

Without a fair process, it?s impossible to get to the truth.? And so people like Vitt have taken matters into their own hands.

?The truth is starting to come out,? Vitt said.? ?[W]e?re gonna keep fighting the fight. We?re not gonna back down.?

Moving forward, it?ll be interesting to see whether Williams or anyone else follows Vitt?s lead in trying to get the truth out, whatever the truth may be.

Manning Gottlieb OMD Earns Media Grand Prix for Google's Phonetic Billboards

CANNES, France? An endearingly quirky billboard campaign for Google Voice Search, featuring more than 150 site-specific ads with phonetic spellings of nearby landmarks, has earned London agency Manning Gottlieb OMD the Grand Prix in Media at this year's Cannes Lions festival here.

Creative agency BBH in London came up with the idea for the phonetic ads?perfect for a product that allows you to speak your search queries instead of typing them. But it was Manning Gottlieb OMD that really turned the campaign into a triumph. The agency researched the neighborhoods where the billboards would appear and created a "hyper-contextual database" of everything interesting near each site. This database became the creative brief for BBH, which then churned out more than 150 site-specific creative executions across 10 formats.

A total of 107 Media Lions were awarded tonight. U.S. agencies won 12 Lions overall, including one gold, which went to MediaCom in New York for its "Project Imagin8ion" campaign for Canon.

New Alternative Fitness Program ?FLYs? in Philadelphia Schools ...

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) October 28, 2004

The United States faces a national crisis regarding the health and welfare of today?s youth. Rising rates of obesity and Type-2 Diabetes are a reality for far too many children, and subsequently their present and future health is at risk.

School physical education programs and cafeterias also experience great difficulty combating the health crises faced by their youth.

FLY Fitness (Fitness as a Lifestyle for Youth), an all-around fitness and nutrition program geared towards teenagers, officially launched in September 2004 with its first program being conducted at Abington Friends School in Pennsylvania.

FLY is taught by certified teacher-trainers in their own community?s schools. It provides alternative strategies for tackling sedentary lifestyles and helps transform poor eating habits into lifelong choices for wellness. In the 5 day a week program, each day represents a different teacher and a different activity including Yoga, strength training, ultimate frisbee, aerobics, hands on cooking classes and field trips to local restaurants.

Unfortunately, due to ?super-sized? fast food meals, take-out foods, and microwavable meals, a small percentage of today?s youth truly understand proper nutritional guidelines. FLY instructors and course materials give students direct advice and skills on how to break down the enormous amounts of food-related information and products which they are faced with daily, so that they can make informed decisions and develop good eating habits.

The current FLY Program structure has three Food Days during the semester. The first is called ?Fruit Smoothie Day?, where students make their own fresh fruit blender drinks. The next is ?Snack and Hydration Day?, a feeding taste test of meal replacement bars, sports drinks, snack foods and the ?FLY Fast Food Drive Though? game. Students read labels and learn about the fat, carbohydrate, and protein amounts in their favorite foods. Finally the semester culminates with a trip to a local restaurant, where students and staff receive a live cooking demonstration and enjoy a healthy meal together.

FLY recently partnered up with Communities in School of Pennsylvania (CIS) to expand its program throughout the state of Pennsylvania. Currently, the program is implemented in one private high school and four inner city high schools in Philadelphia.

FLY was founded by Laura Kahn, RN and Certified Personal Trainer, to meet the needs of students at Abington Friends School in her own community of Jenkintown, PA in Spring 2002. Kahn comments, ?Healthy life transformations are at the heart of our mission. Our goal is to make this program available on a national level to as many kids as we can over the next several years. We believe that the FLY program model offers an array of positive, extra-curricular activities in a non-competitive, socially oriented atmosphere.?

About FLY Fitness

Fitness as a Lifestyle for Youth (FLY) is an innovative health, nutrition & fitness program geared towards youths and implemented through school physical education departments and other youth-based organizations. The FLY Program does not follow the traditional one coach youth sports model. Instead, it is based on a ?cross-training? fitness model where a diverse group of fitness instructors, each teach what they each know and love best.

Xbox leak reveals Kinect 2, augmented reality glasses

8 hrs.

This much we know: Despite their?silence on the subject, Microsoft?is working on the next incarnation of the Xbox. Of course, what that yet-to-be revealed machine will look and play like remains the source of much speculation, rumor and anticipation.?And that speculation, rumor and anticipation went BOOM?this weekend when a??document supposedly outlining Microsoft's plan for its next game machine was leaked online revealing plans for a more powerful?Xbox 720 that makes use of an improved Kinect?device as well as augmented reality glasses.

This 56-page document purporting to be a road?map?for the next Xbox through the year 2015 made its way onto the document sharing site?Scribd.com over the weekend (originally pointed to via NeoGAF here, though it has now?been taken down).?If this document is to be believed -- and there are?good reasons why it both should and should not be believed -- then the next Xbox will launch during the holiday season in 2013 for $299.?

?(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBCUniversal.)

According to the document, this Xbox 720?will be six to eight times more powerful than the current Xbox, it will come with a Blu-ray disc drive for games and will be capable of acting like a DVR for recording videos and later streaming back to other devices.

The leaked?document outlines how the next Xbox?will come bundled?with an?improved Kinect 2 device -- one that can track up to four players at one time -- and, by the year, 2014, will make use of what's referred to as?"Kinect Glasses" or "Fortaleza Glasses." These Wi-Fi/4G enabled glasses will?"deliver ambient experiences" and will offer "seamless integration of the digital world with the physical world" and appear to be a way to take your gaming on the go.

Meanwhile, by the year 2015, Microsoft will delve deep into cloud gaming with the leaked?documents showing how people?will be able to access games from online servers via devices such as a tablet.

While many gaming pundits have pointed out that this document could easily be a (very elaborate) fake, the fact that Microsoft's own lawyers ?--?Covington & Burling LLP -- demanded that the document be taken down from Scribd have lent the whole thing more credence.

Certainly the presentation isn't exactly fresh. Based on some of the things mentioned within, it?appears to be from 2010. So even if this document is for real, it's possible plans for the Xbox 720?have changed since then.

Still, it's worth noting that some items do?ring true. Though Microsoft hasn't said spit about its new machine, many analysts and insiders believe they are prepping for a 2013 launch and rumors of an improved Kinect device are most certainly true. And it's not hard to believe Microsoft is working on augmented reality glasses -- especially since Google has already shown off AR glasses of their own.?Heck, even the folks at Bethesda are working on gaming glasses (see Todd Kenreck's video above).

Meanwhile,?Microsoft's recent SmartGlass revelation rings true with some of the concepts outlined in the leaked document. And it doesn't seem far-fetched that?perhaps the gaming tablet Microsoft is?rumored to be working on?somehow figures into all of this.

One thing is for sure, if this document does turn out to be (mostly) for real, the gaming business is going to get?very interesting?next year.

Iraq: Suicide bombing kills 15 at Shiite funeral

(AP) ? A local health official says 15 Iraqis have been killed and 40 wounded in a suicide bombing northeast of Baghdad that targeted a funeral for a Shiite tribal leader.

Diyala health directorate Faris al-Azzawi said the bomber detonated his explosives belt in a tent where mourners were gathered in Baqouba.

Baqouba is a former Sunni insurgent stronghold located 60 kilometers (35 miles) from the Iraqi capital.

Phony growth, or phony austerity? Pick your poison.

Europe?s austerity policies nor America?s growth policies have worked. In Europe, governments collectively spent 44.8% of GDP in 2000. Today it is 49.2%. That?s not austerity, that?s stimulus, according to Bill Bonner.

How about real austerity? Real growth?

Today, we introduce a new twist on these Daily Reckoning remarks? The new approach is that we are going to write less. Yes?we promise! Long term Daily Reckoning sufferers have heard this before. But this time, we really mean it. Honest injun.

And to prove we are serious, we?re keeping today?s comments to just two pages? And only one subject. An old one.

We live in a world of frauds and counterfeits?bunkum and claptrap?

That?s what makes it so much fun! It brings tears to our eyes one day?and seizures of laughter the next. So many imposters?so little time.

As you know, neither Europe?s austerity policies nor America?s growth policies have worked. Why? Because they are both phony.

In Europe, governments collectively spent 44.8% of GDP in 2000. Today it is 49.2%. A big increase. That?s not austerity?that?s stimulus. The Europeans are letting out their belts, not cinching them up.

And now that the phony austerity is not working, a new batch of leaders wants to try something new ? phony growth. Francois Hollande, France?s new president, says he will hire more government workers and spend more money to promote ?growth.? He also says he?ll raise taxes on the rich to 75% of marginal income (up from 41% now) and increase the ?wealth tax.? How he thinks you get real growth out of this foul mixture is a mystery. The government already directs and consumes half the nation?s output?and the economy is flat. How will it do better with more money? Instead, the French will be wasting resources?squeezing the most productive part of the economy?and getting poorer.

Meanwhile, the US has stuck to its phony growth policies. The feds run huge deficits to ?stimulate? the economy.

(Reuters) ? The government posted a budget deficit of $125 billion in May, more than twice the level registered in the same month last year.

The May deficit, which was close to analyst forecasts, followed a rare month of surplus in April that was due to higher budget receipts during tax season but also other temporary factors.

So far this fiscal year, the budget deficit stands at $844.5 billion, narrower than at the same time a year ago.

Under the government?s accounting system, October is the opening month of fiscal 2012. During fiscal 2011 which ended September 30, the budget deficit totaled $1.296 trillion.

We saw yesterday where all that money has gotten us. Nowhere. Family wealth has dropped back to levels of 20 years ago.

But wait?maybe it?s not the feds? fault. While the Europeans pretend to cut back, maybe America?s stimulus program is a fraud too. That?s what a pair of professors at Yale claim. This ?recovery? is different from previous recoveries, they believe, because the US is following a ?hidden austerity program:?

?there is something historically different about this recession and its aftermath: in the past, local government employment has been almost recession-proof. This time it?s not. Going back as long as the data have been collected (1955), with the one exception of the 1981 recession, local government employment continued to grow almost every month regardless of what the economy threw at it. But since the latest recession began, local government employment has fallen by 3 percent, and is still falling. In the equivalent period following the 1990 and 2001 recessions, local government employment grew 7.7 and 5.2 percent. Even following the 1981 recession, by this stage local government employment was up by 1.4 percent.

Without this hidden austerity program, the economy would look very different. If state and local governments had followed the pattern of the previous two recessions, they would have added 1.4 million to 1.9 million jobs and overall unemployment would be 7.0 to 7.3 percent instead of 8.2 percent.

So, dear reader, pick your poison. Phony growth? Or phony austerity? Neither works. What does work? What would turn this economy around?and put it back on the road to real growth? We?ll tell you next week. We?re out of space for today.

Regards,

Bill Bonner,
