Most errors are quickly forgotten. Others end up remaking the face of science

Image: Photograph by Dan Saelinger

In Brief

  • Mistakes can push scientific understanding forward. Errors that touch on deep features of the world can be more valuable in the long run than narrowly correct ideas.
  • Famously important scientific mistakes include Niels Bohr?s atomic model, the theory of continental drift (in its original form) and the experiments of Enrico Fermi that led to nuclear fission.
  • Two less well-known errors also stand out: a vagabond physicist devised a faster-than-light telegraph in the 1980s. The hunt to uncover its flaws drove advances in quantum information theory.
  • In the 1940s Max Delbr?ck, the key founder of molecular biology, based his research on a number of incorrect and misleading assumptions. He would go on to win a Nobel Prize.

Perhaps more than any other profession, science places a premium on being correct. Of course, most scientists?like most living humans?make plenty of mistakes along the way. Yet not all errors are created equal. Historians have unearthed a number of instances in which an incorrect idea proved far more potent than thousands of others that were trivially mistaken or narrowly correct. These are the productive mistakes: errors that touch on deep, fundamental features of the world around us and prompt further research that leads to major breakthroughs. Mistakes they certainly are. But science would be far worse off without them.

Niels Bohr, for example, created a model of the atom that was wrong in nearly every way, yet it inspired the quantum-mechanical revolution. In the face of enormous skepticism, Alfred Wegener argued that centrifugal forces make the continents move (or ?drift?) along the surface of the earth. He had the right phenomenon, albeit the wrong mechanism. And Enrico Fermi thought that he had created nuclei heavier than uranium, rather than (as we now know) having stumbled on nuclear fission.

Hagan, Brennan spark Red Storm

Junior southpaw Sean Hagan of Larchmont worked 7.1 innings of two-run ball, and junior outfielder Jimmy Brennan of Airmont went 3-for-4 with two RBI as St. John?s University defeated Seton Hall, 6-3, in Clearwater, FL, to advance to the Big East Championship semifinals for a third-straight season.

Matt Wessinger of Liverpool was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two stolen bases, while Frank Schwindel of Livingston, NJ, went 1-for-3 with to two RBI to help the Red Storm (35-21).

Hagan (8-2), a graduate of Mamaroneck HS, had four strikeouts and scattered six hits to improve to 5-0 in his last seven starts.

Seton Hall (34-23) threatened to score first in the top of the third inning as a two-out walk loaded the bases, but Hagan fielded a comebacker to end the frame and strand three runners.

The Red Storm scored three runs in the fifth inning to open a 4-0 lead: after a one-out walk, Suffern High alum Brennan singled to set up runners on the corners before Wessinger lined an RBI single through the left side to set up runners on the corners again. Schwindel followed with a sacrifice fly before Wessinger swiped second, took third on a passed ball, and then scored on an error.

St. John?s was to meet Notre Dame, which beat Seton Hall, 4-3, in an elimination game, needing one more win to advance to the championship contest.

Boulders? Mollica Recognized

Suffern resident Ryan Mollica, a third baseman with the Rockland Boulders, has been named the Can-Am League?s hitter of the week after batting safely in all six of Rockland?s contests for the week, batting .429, with three doubles, two homers and eight runs batted in.

Mollica had a .857 slugging percentage and was walked three times as the Boulders went 3-3 in their home stand. His highlight came in the team?s home-opening 8-4 victory over the Newark Bears on May 22, when the left-handed hitter went 3-for-4 with two homers and four RBI.

Mollica was the Boulders? pacesetter in most offensive categories in 2011, leading the squad in average (.301), homers (10), doubles (19) and RBI (52). It is the first time he has received weekly recognition from the Can-Am League, and he is the first Boulder to do so this season. He becomes the fourth Rockland player to earn league honors in the team?s brief history, joining Sean Smith and Ryde Rodriguez in the hitting category and Roger Lincoln, who won pitcher honors last season.

Mortarboard musings

  • Junior Julia Fiala of Rye is one of eight Franklin & Marshall athletes named to the all-Centennial Conference (CC) Sportsmanship Team. Fiala, a key member on the tennis team, proved that one can be competitive in style, finishing at 9-6 in singles play. The Rye High alumna went 4-1 in doubles with sophomore Anya Sahaydachny of Tenafly, NJ.
  • SUNY Cortland scored seven runs in the top of the fourth inning and defeated Kean University, 10-5, in the opening round of the eight-team, double-elimination NCAA Division III Baseball World Series at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute, WS. Cortland won its 23rd straight game and improved to 40-7-1 on the season. Sophomore Tim Panetta of Mount Kisco, a Gold Glove award winner at his position, went 2-for-5 with an RBI and junior Andrew Pezzuto of Hastings reached base three times on a double and two walks. The Red Dragons were next to face Wheaton (MA) College in a winner?s bracket game.
  • The top-seeded University of Florida women?s lacrosse team was defeated in stunning fashion by No. 4 Syracuse, 14-13 in sudden-death, double overtime, in the semifinals of the NCAA Division I championship at LaValle Stadium on the campus of Stony Brook University. Carolina Chesterman of Rye had one goal for the Gators, who led by seven with less than 12 minutes left to play.

Weekly Sports Poll:

Last week?s sports poll asks what do you think of interleague play in Major League Baseball? Most people in the comments section feel that it is ludicrous that the MLB has been playing under two different sets of rules for so long.

This week, the DSD?s Weekly Poll stays in baseball and asks what New York baseball team has been more surprising this season? The Yankees are fighting to get out of the cellar in the AL East, while the Mets are actually competitive for the first time in years.

Why Non-Car Owners Need Insurance Coverage | Gregg S. Marcus ...

Many people would not understand the purpose of an auto insurance policy for non car owners. This usually comes as a big surprise to many individuals but a car insurance policy is a wise move even for those who do not own a car. Without proper coverage you are eligible to fall into a number of situations that will be discussed at full length later on. In this post, Long Island Insurance Executive, Gregg S. Marcus will discuss the importance of auto insurance regardless of whether or not you own your own vehicle.

Cities which have a dependable mass transit system may lead you to believe you may not need a personal car for your daily movements. In an instance such as this you may think a car rental service will be there to take care of the times in which you must have a vehicle. When you rent a car, you also get an insurance coverage policy for a small period of time. Though a non-owner insurance policy turns out to be even cheaper than purchasing the short term insurance a rental company offers.

If friends and relatives know that you have your own auto insurance policy they will be much more likely to loan their car to you, people will consider you more responsible and trustworthy if you are an individual who possesses an insurance policy even without a car. It should be known that a non-owner auto insurance policy works within certain rule.

While holding a non-owner insurance policy, if an accident occurs your non-owners policy cannot take precedence over the car owner?s policy. Your non-owner insurance policy will only kick in if the car owner?s policy has a liability limit that cannot cover the damages cause by the accident. Your policy jumps in to take care of whatever the initial owner?s policies cannot.

It would be good to know that type of auto insurance policy you wish to obtain. You can make a lot of savings by capitalizing on the disparity and diversity of most car insurance rates. This can lead to the savings of hundreds of dollars or even more. Be sure to get multiple quotes from a vast majority of insurance companies as you never know how much you can save!

If you live in Nassau or Suffolk County on Long Island, New York, and are interested in attaining a non-owners insurance policy or have any questions regarding auto insurance, Contact Gregg S. Marcus today!

Google Doodle Celebrates Bob Moog

Today?s Google Doodle is a fully interactive synthesizer to celebrate the life of synthesizer pioneer Robert Moog. The sound of so many classic recordings from the 70s owes almost entirely to Moog and his crew from the small Trumansburg, New York manufacturing facility hand-wiring these innovative musical instruments.

The ?Moog Sound? is not just due to analog circuitry, but more due to the limitations of the technology and some errors made in designing the circuits. I remember having to do most calculations by hand in undergraduate school, from electromagnetic waves to statistics and more ? and certainly don?t miss those days! But aside from an error in the design, the nature and variability of circuits and lossy connections gave each instrument a unique sound and feel.

Interestingly, last week I was watching a cool history of the MiniMoog, which looks at the major leap from the massive ?wall of wires? that was the Moog Modular to the tiny powerhouse that launched the synthesizer as a popular portable touring instrument for keyboard players from Chick Corea to Rick Wakeman to Keith Emerson and more.

Here is the Minimoog History:

Also, for the next week the Moog synth app Animoog is on sale for $0.99! Definitely grab this one!

Head to MoogMusic for more info ? and be sure to check out the Google Doodle (Or Moogle as I have seen it called)!

Memorial Day skywatching: See the half moon pass Mars

Monday evening bring us a first quarter moon, offering U.S. skywatchers a chance to close out the Memorial Day holiday with a lunar treat and the fading planet Mars.

The first quarter moon is also sometimes called the "half" moon, although as darkness falls across North America close inspection with binoculars or a small telescope may reveal that there is actually a little more than half of the moon illuminated by the sun. That's because the actual moment of first quarter occurred earlier in the afternoon at 4:16 p.m. ET or 1:16 p.m. PT.

When it gets sufficiently dark you'll also take notice of a rather bright yellow-orange star appearing well above and a bit to the moon's left. That?s not a star, however, but a once brilliant planet that continues to ebb in brightness: Mars. Look for this colorful world shining high in the southwest during dusk and lower in the west-southwest as night grows late.

Mars will remain prominent all evening, despite the fact that it will continue to slowly fade in the days and weeks to come as it gradually pulls away from the Earth. When the moon passes it by on Monday, it will still be shining at a respectable magnitude +0.5, which is just a trifle dimmer than the ruddy star Betelgeuse in Orion. [Amazing Pictures of Mars]

Astronomers measure the brightness of objects in the sky on a magnitude scale. The lower an object's magnitude number, the brighter it appears in the night sky. Small digits and negative number magnitudes denote the brightest night sky objects.

By the end of June, Mars will have faded fourth-tenths of a magnitude, to +0.9 (remember the higher the number, the fainter the object), making it just a bit brighter than Spica, the brightest star in the Virgo constellation. By that time its position will be about midway between Spica and the planet Saturn to its east and the bluish 1st-magnitude star Regulus in Leo to its west.

    4. Here's how to win a NASA 'present from space'

But Mars will then be edging toward Spica and Saturn and will have a striking interaction with those two objects later in the summer.

On June 21, Mars will leave the boundaries of Leo, where it has resided since the beginning of February, and moves into Virgo. On the North American evening of June 28, Mars will pass just 15 arc minutes ? 0.25 degrees ? south of the 3.8-magnitude star, Beta Virginis. To get an idea of how close that is, that?s one-half the apparent width of the moon.

Because Mars soon comes to eastern quadrature ? a point in the sky that is 90 degrees east of the sun ? on June 7, it should now appear distinctly gibbous in even a very small telescope. Most amateur telescopes won?t be showing any substantial detail on Mars; in fact by the end of June its apparent diameter will have shrunk to 6.6 arc seconds, which is less than half the size Mars appeared to us in early March when it was closest to earth at 62.6 million miles (100.7 million kilometers) away.? In contrast, by Jun. 30, Mars will have receded to a distance of 131.8 million miles (212.1 million km) from us.

But at least we have a spacecraft heading for the Red Planet that is drawing near!

The Mars Science Laboratory, which launched in November 2011, is carrying the 1-ton Curiosity rover which is scheduled to land on the Martian surface early on Aug. 6 to begin a two-year prime mission. Curiosity's landing site is near the base of a mountain inside Gale Crater, near the Martian equator. Researchers plan to use Curiosity to study layers in the mountain that hold evidence about wet environments of early Mars.

Editor's note: If you snap an amazing picture of the moon and Mars that you'd like to be considered for use in a story or gallery, please send images and comments to SPACE.com managing editor Tariq Malik at tmalik@space.com.

The Clumsy Art of Relationship {losing control, accepting change}

Did this post res?onate with you? Pass it?on!

?Rela?tion?ships are the hard?est thing,? I said to a close friend as we sipped mugs of cof?fee on a rainy Port?land after?noon. ?I don?t think I?m very good at?them.?

?Who is?? replied my friend. ?Rela?tion?ships are hard for every?one. That?s why there is so much bro?ken?ness. We all strug?gle with rela?tion?ships to one degree or one another.?

My house can be a mess, my cup?boards dys?func?tional and the laun?dry heaped into a small moun?tain range. These things I can let go of and not fret too much. ?But in the realm of human rela?tion?ships, I ago?nize and worry and try to man?age the anx?i?ety of being con?nected to oth?ers as best I?can.

There are many things that make rela?tion?ships a tricky art for me. I want to talk about just three of them: ? Con?trol, change and acceptance.

Con?trol. I have had to learn the hard way (and am still learn?ing) that I can?not con?trol other human beings, try as I may. I can?not con?trol the think?ing, feel?ings or actions of oth?ers. I might influ?ence other peo?ple with my words and deeds, but ulti?mately, we each live in our skin alone and in our skin we decide how to respond to the world that swirls around us.I don?t like this. It cre?ates ten?sion and unpre?dictabil?ity. ?I want to con?trol how oth?ers feel, how they feel about me and how they per?ceive me. On more than one occa?sion in my life have I been per?ceived inac?cu?rately and it felt unfair, even unde?served. But I can?not con?trol how oth?ers inter?pret me any?more than I can con?trol the weather. Not every?one will get me. ??Some?times I am misunderstood.

Change. Peo?ple come and go in my life. Friends change as some move away and new ones move in. Some friend?ships fiz?zle out for no appar?ent rea?son. Some peo?ple move away emo?tion?ally and make it clear that the friend?ship is chang?ing to acquain?tance. It can be bewil?der?ing. Even fam?ily rela?tion?ships change with the sea?sons of life. I?m reflec?tive of this right now as our first-??born is about to grad?u?ate from high school in two weeks. She will move out in the fall and already I miss her. I don?t want her to leave. ?Can?t we slow down change for another year or two?or three or twenty? ?The only thing that stays the same is change, as the say?ing goes. It adds to the clum?si?ness I pos?sess in chang?ing with the dynamic of the rela?tion?ships around me.

Accep?tance. ?Accept?ing that I don?t have con?trol and that change will inevitably hap?pen is not always easy. Anx?i?ety grips my belly and fogs my think?ing. My emo?tions get tan?gled up and I don?t know what I can trust in my per?cep?tions. Is that friend?ship really dwin?dling or just on a hia?tus? ?Do I still need to remind my daugh?ter of her oblig?a?tions or am I hov?er?ing? ?Accept?ing that I don?t have con?trol and that change will hap?pen with or with?out my per?mis?sion is a big learn?ing curve for me. I want to con?trol the sit?u?a?tion, the friend?ships and rela?tion?ships that inter?sect with my life. I have to be mind?ful to accept what is beyond my reach. The Seren?ity Prayer is prayed often in my angst-??drenched scope of human relationships.

God, grant me the seren?ity to accept the things I can?not change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wis?dom to know the difference.

The older I get the more I real?ize how much I need to loosen my grip on expec?ta?tions. Expect?ing oth?ers to like me or accept me is a sure?fire way to kick up the dust of inse?cu?rity. Self-??acceptance is what is key, I?ve come to real?ize. Being com?fort?able with who I am and how I am wired. Not every?one will appre?ci?ate the fas?ci?nat?ing woman I am becom?ing. ?At times I irri?tate oth?ers and some?times I out?right piss some?body off. Can?t we all just get along? could be my tagline. But such is life. Con?trol. Change. Accep?tance. I am learn?ing the art of rela?tion?ships through this grid. I have to accept with a mea?sure of trep?i?da?tion that it will always be ?an uneasy task for me, yet the joy of true friend?ship and last?ing rela?tion?ship far out?lasts the momen?tary dis?tress of my clum?si?ness with other human beings.

How are rela?tion?ships for you? What insights do you have for nav?i?gat?ing the chang?ing, uncon?trol?lable waters of friend?ships and relationships?

Google to start sharing copyright takedown requests

Google is adding another layer to its transparency, as the search giant has begun sharing copyright removal data.

The data is derived from copyright holders requesting Google to remove search results linking to infringing content.

As part of the Transparency Report, Google will now share which firms make removal requests, how often, and against which domains.

Google is currently only reporting copyright removal requests from its web search, meaning that the numbers do not currently include removal requests made to the Google-owned services Youtube and Blogger.

Copyright by the numbers

Search accounts for more than 95 percent of Google's copyright removals, which averages more than 250,000 removal requests each week. And that number is growing.

In fact, last month nearly 1.2 million removal requests were made on behalf of more than 1,000 copyright holders.

"Transparency is a crucial element to making this system work well," Google said.

The data also provides unique insight into the domains that are accused of possessing copyrighted content.

In the past month the domain filestube.com earned the highest number of URLs removed from Google searches with 41,307 links pulled due to removal requests from 240 copyright owners.

However, those copyright infringing links account for less than 0.1 percent of the URLs that belong to filestube.com.

Of course, these statistics can be interpreted a number of ways.

For example, the growing number of reported infringements could be seen as the result of higher piracy rates, improved ability for copyright holders to find infringements, or a combination of both.

Google hopes that the data can help to inform policies on internet piracy, such as the SOPA and PIPA bills that were proposed and vehemently opposed by Google earlier this year.

"Transparency is a crucial element to making this system work well," Google said.

"We look forward to making more improvements to our Transparency Report - offering copyright owners, Internet users, policymakers and website owners the data they need to see and understand how removal requests from both governments and private parties affect our results in Search."

RINEHART RAP: PM vows foreign workers will not take jobs from Aussies

PM Julia Gillard said?"jobs board'' would be created for Australians in the resources sector.?Picture: Gary Ramage Source: The Daily Telegraph

PRIME Minister Julia Gillard vowed that no foreign worker would take a job that an Australian could do, as she battled to contain the fallout from a government decision to approve the hire of 1715 migrant labourers on a major mining project..

Ms Gillard has been lashed by union leaders and members of her own party over yesterday?s announcement by the federal government that mining magnate Gina Rinehart would be permitted to hire up to 20 per cent of the construction workforce on her Roy Hill iron ore project from overseas.

Labor Senator Doug Cameron warned earlier today at the Prime Minister faced tough questions at a caucus meeting on Tuesday over the issue, which erupted in the midst of a government campaign against resources billionaires as it attempts to sell its ?battlers? budget?.

Speaking today in Melbourne, Ms Gillard attempted to douse the flames, saying that a "jobs board'' would be created that would give Australian workers information about what jobs were available in the resources sector.

"Yesterday I decided we would add to what we're doing to make sure that Aussies are getting the jobs,'' Ms Gillard said. "Companies won't be able to bring in foreign workers if there is an Australian ready, able and willing to do the work on the jobs board.''

Ms Gillard told union leaders in Canberra yesterday that she was ?furious? that the decision on the Roy Hill workers by Immigration Minister Chris Bowen had not been taken to cabinet, but that by the time she learned of the approval on Wednesday, Ms Rinehart?s Hancock Prospecting had already been informed of the decision and it could not be reversed.

A Labor source yesterday said Ms Gillard, whose leadership is under renewed threat, admitted at a meeting of angry union leaders and manufacturing sector representatives she only learned on Wednesday of her Immigration Minister Chris Bowen's decision to grant the approval.

Senior left-wing MP Doug Cameron said he was "gobsmacked" and said MPs had not been consulted by the PM's office or Mr Bowen.

"I am shocked that, while workers are being marched off the job at Kurri Kurri and Tullamarine ... Chinese workers are going to be marching on to the job in the Pilbara," he told The Daily Telegraph.

"There must be a proper process of consultation with the caucus and the ACTU.

I thought we were being pulled into a more consultative position, clearly not."

Paul Howes, AWU national secretary, demanded to know what "political genius" had granted the $9.5 billion Roy Hill iron ore mine temporary foreign labour in a week when 800 workers at Qantas and at the Hydro aluminium smelter had lost their jobs and said the decision was "sheer lunacy".

Mr Bowen said the project might stall without foreign labour. Managers of the Pilbara project told the government there was a lack of local workers in the region and it would need foreign labour to complete construction.

Mr Howes said the policy made a mockery of his AWU ally Treasurer Wayne Swan's campaign of bashing mining magnates Clive Palmer, Ms Rinehart and Andrew Forrest and spreading the benefits of the boom.

After a budget framed as sharing mining wealth with all Australians, Mr Howes said: "After months of the government making it clear Gina Rinehart is our enemy, where is the consistency?, what are we doing? It doesn't make sense."

The decision to grant the Roy Hill project an enterprise migration agreement to allow it to employ up to 1715 foreign workers during construction was announced the same day Mr Howes and other union leaders met with Ms Gillard for a manufacturing round table.

"I expressed to the Prime Minister our amazement at this decision," he said.

"I still can't get my head around what genius thought this was a good idea. It is sheer lunacy in a week where so many jobs have been cut."

The round table is trying to address the manufacturing crisis in which 130,000 people have lost their jobs since 2008.

The foreign workers are expected to come from the UK, Europe, India, China, South Korea and the Philippines. At least 6758 Australians will be employed on construction, including 2000 trainees.

"The temporary overseas workers will make up less than 20 per cent of the construction workforce, and the sooner construction is finished the sooner 2000 permanent jobs will be created for Australians," a Roy Hill spokesman said.

Mr Bowen defended the decision: "Governments make decisions based on the evidence before them."

Joyce, Rays slam Red Sox

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:18 p.m. ET May 25, 2012

BOSTON (AP) - Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon wasn't hiding his feelings about what happened in the ninth inning. In his eyes, it was as clear as the Rays' power display against Boston starter Jon Lester.

Matt Joyce hit his second grand slam in six games and Elliot Johnson had a two-run shot to lift the Rays to their third straight win, 7-4 over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night in a game that saw the benches empty in the ninth inning.

The Rays pounding of Lester was only the subplot to a feisty ninth.

Boston reliever Franklin Morales threw behind DH Luke Scott with the first pitch of an at-bat and hit him in the hip area on a 3-1 count. Scott was restrained by catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and the benches and bullpens emptied. There was a lot of pushing and shoving along the first-base line that carried over behind home plate before order was restored.

"That's truly somebody flexing their muscles on the other side and they need to put them in their back pocket and understand they can hurt their own team for something like that," Maddon said. "To be really carelessly incompetent on their side and truly try to hit someone and throw behind somebody and hitting them in the leg for all the wrong reasons eventually they can get their own guys hurt. That was ridiculous. It was absurd, idiotic. I'll use all those words.

"Our guys got it. We had every reason to be totally into the push-back right there. We didn't start anything. We don't start stuff. We'll finish stuff, but we don't start it."

Maddon was asked if it was possible things would continue in the rest of the series.

"That's not up to us," he said.

Carlos Pena, inserted into the leadoff spot after a miserable slump, added a solo homer for the Rays.

Adrian Gonzalez had an RBI double for Boston, which lost for just the fourth time in 14 games.

But it was that ninth inning scrum that was the topic afterward.

Someone in the Rays' clubhouse turned down the music and a handful of players watched the TV as Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine spoke. Closer Fernando Rodney mockingly booed.

"We thought it was dirty and we did the best we can to protect ourselves," Pena said. "We saw one behind his back and almost hit him, and then the last one hits him. It's crazy when you see things happening and it actually does. Everyone in our dugout knew it was coming and when it did, it was like: `There it is."'

The Red Sox (22-23) failed to move above .500 for the fourth time this season. It's the latest into a season they haven't gone over .500 since 1996 when they didn't do it until late August.

"We were all out there. They were out there," Valentine said of the scrum. "I liked the spirit of the guys going out there. Salty was great. I had a little adrenaline going and the guys had some adrenaline going, so that's good. Nothing wrong with that. ... Maybe it was the ghost of Fenway past remembering that he bad-mouthed all our fans and our stadium or something, just directing the ball at his leg."

Scott called Fenway Park "a dump" during spring training, but later tried to explain that it was a hard place to work.

"I can imagine it's a great place for someone to go watch a baseball game and the nostalgia of it," Scott said. "I made a comment, as a player it's a difficult to place to get your workout. The end, that's it."

Boston pitching coach Bob McClure and Ben Zobrist of the Rays seemed to be the two most heated, but they were separated. When things cooled down, Boston DH David Ortiz patted Scott on the back and walked him partly to first. A few fans and Rays players were yelling at each other near Tampa Bay's dugout when the players left the field after the incident. B.J. Upton seemed to be the one most involved with the fans near the end of the Rays' dugout.

"It crossed the line," he said of a comment, saying he was unsure if it was racial. "I felt like it did. It takes a lot for me."

Alex Cobb (2-0), making his second start since being recalled from Triple-A Durham to take Jeff Niemann's spot in the rotation after the right-hander broke his right fibula, held Boston to two runs and three hits, while walking four and striking out two in five innings.

Rodney got his 15th save in 15 chances.

Lester (3-4) took the loss, giving up a season-high three homers.

Trailing 1-0 in the third, the Rays took the lead on Joyce's slam into the Red Sox bullpen, his second in 13 at-bats. The other came in a 5-2 win over Atlanta on May 19, also Cobb's start. Tampa Bay had loaded the bases on a single by Upton that was sandwiched by walks to Pena and Zobrist.

Johnson and Pena homered three pitches apart in the fourth, increasing the Rays' lead to 7-1. Johnson's went into the Green Monster seats and Pena, hitting leadoff for the third straight game after going 0 for 17, hit his into the first row of seats down the right-field line, just past Marlon Byrd's leap into the stands.

Pena has gone 4 for 12 with two homers and four RBIs since being moved to the top of the order.

Lester, who had allowed just four homers all season before Friday, was tagged for seven runs and six hits, walked three and struck out four in four innings. He had held opponents to three runs or fewer in four of his previous five starts.

Boston cut it to 7-2 on Gonzalez's RBI double off the Monster, but Cobb got Kevin Youkilis to bounce into an inning-ending ground out with runners on second and third. It was the last batter he faced.

Byrd had an RBI single and Mike Aviles a sacrifice fly, narrowing the gap to 7-4 in the sixth.

The Red Sox had taken a 1-0 lead on Youkilis' RBI single.

NOTES: Scott looked like he was endearing himself to the fans a bit before the game near Tampa Bay's dugout during batting practice, tossing at least a half dozen balls to fans, joking with a number and signing autographs for many. During his last trip to Boston, when the Rays were the opponent for the season-opening series of Fenway Park's 100th year, Scott was booed nearly every time he came to bat. ... Boston RHP Josh Beckett (4-4) faces David Price (6-3) on Saturday night.
